What is Corning Gorilla Glass?

Gorilla Glass is an environmentally friendly glass made by Corning. Gorilla glass is the predecessor of the corning company in the 1960s, special bulletproof glass, often used in helicopters, under normal circumstances, unintentional damage will not cause scratches.

After 2010, the company changed its technology for damage-resistant displays in the consumer electronics industry.

In January 2012, corning announced the launch of its second-generation gorilla glass at CES, which will be available to consumers in May 2012. The new gorilla glass is thinner and lighter than previous versions and can even be bent to provide better protection for touch-screen devices.

January 10, 2013 — corning showed off the third-generation gorilla glass at CES and demonstrated how strong it was. In the field test, the demonstrator hit the center of different glass positions with 175g metal balls. The ordinary glass was immediately broken, but there was no damage to the third generation of gorilla glass. Native Damage Resistance technology is adopted in the new generation of products. Compared with the previous generation of products, visible scratches are reduced by 40%, and structural strength is increased by 40%. Products using the screen are expected to be available this year.

Thickness

The first-generation gorilla glass is uniform in thickness and can range from 0.7mm to 2.0mm in thickness. The second-generation gorilla glass, introduced in 2012, is 20% thinner than the first-generation.This means that after adopting the second generation of gorilla, the device will have the same protective effect as the first generation, but the saved thickness can be used in other fields, such as batteries, which can effectively solve the problem of insufficient battery life.

Smoothness

This kind of glass surface roughness is very low, feels smooth, it is very suitable for touch-screen mobile-phone liquid crystal protective layer.

Degree of resistance to delimit
As the most unique function, anti-scratch has always been a project that users are most willing to challenge. Some users intentionally use knives or keys to scratch on the screen to test the anti-friction property of glass, and often do not show scratches after wiping the screen.

Degree of impact resistance
Poor impact resistance is the disadvantage of this kind of glass, in the anti-scratch ability, its impact resistance is not strong, accidentally fall down the case is likely to be broken.

Apply
It is mainly applied to the screen of high-end smartphones with high scratch resistance requirements.

Gorilla Glass is widely used in high-end smartphones and tablet computers, such as the iPhone and iPad screens, and is also used in LCD TVs at several major international manufacturers.
